Neighbourhood Life

The Art of Living Well on Vancouver's West Side

· Elise Lambert

Beautiful homes, walkable neighbourhoods and the pleasures of living locally.

There's something appealing about a home where you can walk out the door and find everything you need nearby. A favourite café, a good bakery, a neighbourhood market or a restaurant for an impromptu dinner.

In Kitsilano, Point Grey and Fairview, that convenience comes with another attraction: quiet residential streets, established gardens, beautiful architecture and a wide variety of homes.

For some, the ideal is a single-level residence in a boutique building. For others, it's a beautifully finished half-duplex, a garden-level home or a contemporary townhome. Good design, natural light, quality finishes and a practical layout can matter far more than having extra square footage.

Kitsilano: A neighbourhood with personality

West 4th Avenue is a destination in itself, with its cafés, independent shops, restaurants and familiar local businesses. Broadway has its own favourites, including Parthenon Market, a neighbourhood staple.

What makes Kitsilano special is how quickly the atmosphere changes. A few blocks from the shopping streets, you'll find mature trees, character homes, gardens and quiet residential avenues. And, of course, there's Kits Beach and the waterfront, always worth a visit.

Point Grey: A little quieter, just as connected

Farther west, Point Grey has its own collection of neighbourhood favourites along West 10th Avenue, with cafés, bakeries and independent shops.

The residential streets are peaceful, and Jericho Beach, Locarno and Spanish Banks are close by. It's an appealing part of the city for anyone who enjoys getting outdoors while having everyday conveniences within reach.

Fairview and South Granville: A cultural neighbourhood

Fairview offers a different experience. The streets surrounding Granville are home to boutique condominium buildings, townhomes and established residential properties, many within walking distance of South Granville's galleries, shops, restaurants and the Stanley Theatre.

Granville Island and the False Creek waterfront add even more variety, from fresh food markets to waterfront walks.

It's a particularly interesting area for buyers looking for a beautifully finished home in a neighbourhood where they can leave the car behind for many of their daily activities.

A home that suits your life

There's no single formula for comfortable living. Some people want a private garden, others a generous terrace or a beautifully designed space that's easy to maintain.

What these West Side neighbourhoods offer is choice, both in housing and in how you spend your time.

And sometimes that's what makes a home feel just right: not only what you find inside, but how much you enjoy the neighbourhood around it.
